Inspired by Heritage. Designed with Intention.
Founded by Monique Clarke, the brand emerged during an unexpected season of reflection. As the world slowed during the pandemic, so did life—creating space for daydreams of fabrics, silhouettes, and garments that had yet to exist. Without any formal training in fashion, Monique began sketching those ideas, discovering a creative path that had been waiting to unfold.
That journey eventually led to the African continent, where a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, heritage textiles, and artisan traditions transformed inspiration into purpose.
From the beginning, Makazi was never intended to be another mass-produced fashion label. Our atelier is proudly based in The Gambia, where we partner with skilled artisans to create contemporary garments that honour generations of craftsmanship while bringing local artistry to a global stage.
Makazi exists to prove that great fashion is more than clothing.
It is where heritage is honoured, craftsmanship is celebrated, and intention meets personal expression.
